Human life is a shirt journey Every human is born with a purpose that differs from man to man. Some of us can fulfill all the purposes. We might spend an ordinary life with the only aim to earn daily bread and butter, save money and lead a secure life. However, there are others who dedicate their entire life to the betterment of society, country, and the world. Their great deeds have no political or religious boundaries. The grandiose of their presence remains a feeling of reliance for all.
Architect Mubasshar Hossain was such a momentarily born person who served the country and mother earth till the end of his life. He had a versatile professional life where social work and human welfare was the controlling agent. He was an architect, urbanist, environmentalist, social worker, and sports organiser. On top of all these, he was a freedom fighter and a member of the crack platoon.
Beyond the professional world, he spread himself on a larger scale, beyond the borders of the country; he was also popular on the international platform. He was elected as the president of ARCASIA, the collective body of architects in the Asia region, and served as the elected president of the Commonwealth Association of Architects. He served as the President of the Executive Committee of the Institute of Architects Bangladesh, IAB for a total of five terms.
He introduced a novel and completely new chapter of protest, ‘Urban and Citizen Movement’. Subsequently, in continuation of this, he became involved with environmental and civic movements through related organisations such as ‘Bangladesh Environmental Movement’ (BAPA) and ‘Consumer’s Association of Bangladesh’ (CAB). He was always a dissenting voice against any irregularity or injustice.
He took up arms for the liberation of our motherland in 1971. He had fought till the last day of his life, playing a significant role in every aspect. Leaving behind his glorious and successful life, this fighter breathed his last on January 2, 2023.
One of the most enlightened persons in this country, Mubasshar Hossain was born on December 27, 1943 in the British India. His birthplace was Brahmanbaria. After the unfortunate demise of his father at a very early age, he went to Bogura at his maternal grandfather’s place. His school life started there. Later at a young age, he came to Wari, Dhaka.
Mubasshar Hossain completed his graduation in Architecture from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, BUET. In 1976, Mubasshar Hossain and his friend Mostafa Kamal started an organisation called Associate Consultants. This company built with their joint initiative started moving forward slowly.
In 1985, the initiative for registration of Associate Consultant as a limited Company was taken. From then a new and more spread journey started in the name of ASSO Consultants. A significant number of structures in different regions of Bangladesh that have set unique examples of architectural style were designed and built by Asso Consultants. Among his significant works, are 22 storied Grameen Bank Head Office, 13 storied Proshika Head Office, RDRS Complex in Rangpur and Lalmanirhat, Proshika HDRC in Manikganj, Restoration of the old rail station of Chittagong, and the new Chittagong Railway Station.
In 1995, he established his real estate development company ‘Neer Limited’. Several apartment buildings and mixed-use buildings of Neer Ltd. can be seen in the capital Dhaka and various districts. Mobassher Hossain has an outstanding contribution to the architecture and construction industry of Bangladesh. He is one of the pioneers of fair professional practice in this country.
He was awarded AIA President’s Medal Award in 2009 and received IAB Gold Medal in 2018. He was an honourary member of the American Institute of Architects, AIA. His contribution to the welfare of the Institute of Architects Bangladesh, IAB, and the architect community is undeniable. He spent most of his life in the welfare of architects and their development.
Architect Mubasshar Hossain is a prime example of how wide and varied a man’s field of work can be. His patriotism and love for humanity are unbeatable. Rising above success and failure, he has worked for human beings and social welfare. We express our gratitude to this hero. He has worked for the welfare of this country with his everything, showing us the path of light, showing the path of ideals, and providing strength and courage to fight. He has shown how to live with his head held high, without caring and without fear. Even after his death, he set a great example of selflessness by donating his body to BSMMU for research purposes in medical science.
Architect Mubasshar Hossain was a living legend in our society. He was full of life and enthusiasm. We pay our tributes to this fighter, who has been a leader, a hero, and above all a legend
