As we embark on this remarkable journey, we are about to step into the world where clay and ingenuity converge, where every piece of pottery tells a story, and where the patron’s 31-year legacy has molded Bangladesh’s ceramic sector into a vibrant, resilient, and enduring masterpiece. In an interview, on September 2023, Shahanawaz, the Executive Director of Mir Ceramic, candidly shared with us his experiences and insights from his remarkable journey.

Mr. Shahanawaz hails from the northern district Natore, where he completed his primary and high school education. He completed B.Com (Hons), M.Com (Marketing). Graduating in 1984, he ventured into the pharmaceutical sector in 1985, dedicating seven years to the field. However, the multinational pharmaceutical companies in Bangladesh faced challenges during the rule of HM Ershad, many leading foreign companies to exit the country. Consequently, Shahanawaz had to transition from the pharmaceutical sector. He joined Bengal Fine Ceramics on August 1992, marking the beginning of his career in the ceramic industry. Taking charge of the overseas department, he traveled extensively through various European countries, gaining valuable firsthand experience in the field. His foray into the ceramic sector continued when he assumed the role of senior marketing manager at Mir Ceramic Limited on May 2, 2004. Remarkably, he has been serving in this capacity at the company since then. In 2008, Shahanawaz furthered his education by completing an MBA.

Unhealthy Price Competition Takes a Toll on Bangladesh’s Ceramic Industry

The ceramic industry faces a blow from the detrimental impacts of unhealthy price competition, as he observed. The relentless pursuit of lower prices has triggered adverse consequences, posing significant challenges to the sector. This unhealthy competition not only compromises the profitability of ceramic enterprises but also undermines the overall sustainability of the industry. The race to offer the lowest prices has led to a compromised quality in products, impacting the reputation of the ceramic industry on the global stage. To address this issue, stakeholders must prioritise strategies that foster fair competition, innovation, and product differentiation. Collaborative efforts are essential to uplift the industry, ensuring its resilience and long-term success. By prioritising quality over cutthroat pricing, the sector in the country can regain its competitive edge and secure a sustainable future in the global market.

Unlocking Growth Potential: Shahanawaz Advocates FDI in the country’s Ceramic Industry

In a bid to take the sector to new heights, Mr. Shahanawaz, an influential figure in the industry, emphasises the pivotal role of foreign direct investment (FDI). Recognising the potential for substantial growth, he underscores the necessity of policy adjustments. Mr. Shahanawaz specifically highlights the pressing need to reduce import duties on raw materials, a key barrier hindering the sector’s expansion.

Reducing import duties on raw materials is identified as a strategic move to attract foreign investment, injecting vitality into the industry. By advocating these policy changes, he envisions a revitalised sector, capable of harnessing international investments. Such proactive measures not only address barriers but also position Bangladesh as a favourable destination for foreign investors, fostering innovation, technological advancement, and sustainable growth in the dynamic realm of ceramic manufacturing.

Shahanawaz’s Call for Urgent Action Amidst Ceramic Industry Crisis

Underlining the critical state of the sector, Shahanawaz addresses a 30 per cent production dip driven by a 26-27 per cent spike in gas prices, sparking a severe gas crisis. Advocating collaboration, he urges swift measures to stabilise prices and rejuvenate ceramic manufacturing for economic resilience. Apart from this, a dollar crisis has impacted letter of credit (L/C) openings, causing disruptions in the import of raw materials. Existing policies governing these transactions are under scrutiny as businesses grapple with uncertainties. This situation necessitates a reassessment of import practices and calls for adaptive policies to navigate the challenges posed by the current economic landscape.

Shahanawaz’s Vision for Sectoral Advancement

Shahanawaz envisions propelling the sector to new heights through the adoption of state-of-the-art technology and a strategic shift towards diversified product lines. His innovative approach emphasises steering away from conventional products, paving the way for transformative growth and positioning the industry at the forefront of innovation.
